News and Notes, Recovery Edition

So, we're a couple days into post-tonsil/adenoid life, and all is well.  Carter has been doing great, though I think we're starting the downhill slide as he was complaining this morning about his throat being sore.  I'm hoping it's just that it's worse in the morning (as it was yesterday, as well) because he hasn't been drinking water most of the night so it's drier than usual, which can cause it to hurt more.  I've been trying to at least have him sip water after his medicine overnight, but I'm not sure it's helping.  Most of the time he says it feels fine, but every once in a while it seems worse.  And each time that happens now, I'm getting nervous that he's heading into scab territory that everyone says is the worst.  Time will tell, I guess, but thankfully we have a low-key weekend ahead with no sports, so that will make things a bit easier.  Of course, the forecasted 75mph winds on Sunday might complicate that low-key weekend a bit.  I actually grocery shopped tonight with a thought toward what might happen if we lost power like we did last time winds got that high.  God forbid we go through that again, because this time it would mean an extra long winter break for Jacob and two kids to occupy with no power.  Yuck.  Pray it somehow avoids us.  In the meantime, if you need us we'll be figuring out how to move Jacob's basketball hoop into the garage.

Instead of fixating on the anxiety-fest ahead, I figured I'd rewind to before the surgery.  We had a nice weekend with Craig, who finally didn't have a game.  He got to see a full basketball game for Jacob for the first time.  It was a hard-fought game where Jacob's team lost a nice lead, but in the end they tied.  Jacob had four points, including a three-pointer.  The game included a lot of fouls and Jacob is once again feeling like he's not getting passed to enough, but he's playing well.  I think we just have to be patient.  I figured out a decent setting on my camera to take action shots of him, so here are a couple...

I asked Carter if he had any last requests before his surgery, and he wanted brownies.  So, brownies he got on Monday.

The boys were both home and it was a typical crazy day trying to keep them apart.  At one point I heard them both laughing maniacally, and eventually they pointed to the ceiling, where I saw this:

That, my friends, is a sticky cross.  It's basically like a sticky hand.  Carter flung it, apparently just a little too much, and it went about 12 feet up on the living room ceiling.  For years my fear has been mylar balloons, but it turns out the sticky cross was enemy #1.  I have no idea how he got it up there, let alone how it stuck so well.  My first attempt was to throw a stuffed animal at it to try to knock it down.  Nope.  My second attempt was with the tape measure, as it seemed like one of the few things that would reach that high.  But it was hard to keep it from folding over when it was that tall, and then it definitely wasn't sturdy enough to scrape it off.  Finally, I grabbed the Swiffer Wet Jet and climbed on the chair (a La-Z-Boy rocker--not ideal) and balanced just long enough to get the handle up that high and scrape it off.  Thank goodness--both for my sanity and the boys' well being!

I tried to appreciate my time with Carter on Monday, since we didn't know what lay ahead of us with the surgery and recovery.  He did such a nice job on building this house!

Yesterday we enhanced the setup by building a train track and ticket booth.  He's so creative when he gets himself away from a screen!

I also wanted to share the loveliness that is my Valentine flowers from Craig.  Still hanging in there a week later!

Not much else to report since we're doing a lot of hanging out these days, but we did find out Jacob's entrance exam results were good enough for a small but nice scholarship to his new school next year.  We can now start the enrollment process.  Next year is going to be quite the experience for all of us!

Well, I'm getting very sleepy but medicine time comes again in an hour so I guess I'm going to go get it ready and take a nap before my night's sleep!  Yawn.  More soon!
